Start at the top?

Should you always start at the top of the tree?

A friend calls and says "I have a lot to tell you, some things about people and some things about events." Your brother calls, "Mom's sick. We're going to the hospital now."

In navigation through websites, I tend to think of things in a tree structure with branches for each category. I picture users clicking down the tree. Groceries > Fruit > Apples. But in many cases, it might be better to take them to a destination that's close to what they want, then let them move back up or across the tree. Bananas > Fruit > Apples.

In names and descriptions, I tend to think of things that don't leave anything out. The email subject line for my newsletter for March was "Democratic News and Events for March". Maybe it should have been "Debate tomorrow (and other news)".
